A photographer and a camera are considered a couple. A terrestrial and an inanimate object with kindred spirits. How the camera’s lens work and how it is designed like the human’s eyes is considerably one of the most beautiful invention in the history of mankind. In this quick interview with one of tumblr PH’s well-loved photographers, Patrick Velasco (@putograft) talks about cameras, its value, and why choosing the right one matters.

Let’s talk about you first. Are you still studying? Where and what course are you taking up?

My name is Patrick. Just turned 21 this year. It may sound unreal because they say I really do look young… on photos, but I already graduated from Our Lady of Fatima University with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing since March last year. I’m now a registered nurse but still venturing on what I want to do with life. Still undecided and torn between two things I like. Photography and Medicine.

When did your knack for photography started?

My interest on taking photos started when I was in 4th year high school. I just wanted to impress my ex girlfriend who dumped me. Hahaha! I kid. I kid. I don’t know, I just like hearing the sound of the shutter and trying to make everything I photograph look nice.

What was the first camera you had?

My first camera was given to me by my favorite uncle. It’s a Nikon D50. He abused it for about 2 years before giving it to me on Christmas of 2008.

For the record, how many cameras do you own? What are they?

I own 4 cameras at the moment but I’d rather not name some since I don’t want to brag about them and I use some of them very rarely to never.I use 2 Nikon dslr’s: Nikon D700 and a Nikon D5200.

Most abused camera you have?

Fact: I buy and sell cameras. I don’t really care about sentimental value but I do care about the re-sale value. Haha! It’s just a camera. It’s not a person whom you have to keep because it’s important and you spent so much time and money for them. Anyway, back to cameras. I used to own a Nikon D50 before moving to a Nikon D90 which was stolen, then I moved up to a Nikon D300 and a 3 months after I got myself a Nikon D300s before leaping to the full frame DSLR which I currently have. The most abused camera would be the D300s which is now being lashed by my good friend.

What is your favorite subject for your photographs and why?

I take pictures of almost everything. I still don’t know where I want to focus but covering events and doing food, travel and fashion photography is so fun. I’m just indecisive that’s all. They say my work is more on the Photo-journalistic side for my photos tends to convey stories.

From a noob’s vantage point, these cameras we see (digicam, slr, dslr, polaroids etc) are just the same. They take pictures. How will you explain the difference they make once we press that button,and how important is choosing the right camera for those aspiring photographers?

It’s solely about control. Let’s compare it to cars to make it easier. One with manual transmission and one with an automatic transmission. It both works but it depends on how you drive. Slow or fast. Choosing a camera is very important for it is an aide for your skill. A camera is just a camera. It still depends on how you use it. Understanding your camera’s limit is also vital.

Professional photographer you look up to and what is it in his/her photographs that leaves you at awe?

Steven Meisel - One of the most iconic fashion photographers of all time, Steven Meisel easily remains the one photographer with whom all the models aspire to work. Has photographed every cover of Vogue Italia since 1988. High fashion portraits containing stories. He’s a god for me.

From what seem to be inspired by an active lifestyle, Kassy Pajarillo, designer of KAS by Design came up with the RAS WRAP after she got into a situation after yoga practice that she needed to attend a client engagement.

“Necessity opens up windows to opportunities,” said Kassy. “From what seemed to be just a headband I tried to stitch and use to help my hair stay put during yoga practice and running session, came out this piece of what seemed to be just holes and a very long yard of cloth”

A piece of clothing which can be used several ways according to body type, ” I was surprised that it can actually transform into so much more than just a cover up”

Kassy finds designs inspired by what is functional, easy to lug and organic. She also aim to support what is solely made from the Philippines and appreciate handmade items which takes days to make.

RAS WRAP was coined from her supportive friend who was an inspiration and motivation to her entrepreneurial venture. The RAS WRAP is dedicated and is truly made for the goal-getter, jet-setter, and the jill-of-all trades.

When asked about her long term goal, she shared ”I want to help women, perhaps, someday, I’d be able to come up with a foundation for women empowerment”

It’s already late and I’m left with nothing to do. The lights are shut and as far as I know, every person in this house are deep asleep. Luckily, all campaign materials are fixed and I’m absolutely set for tomorrow’s house to house campaign. I admit that I still lack sleep but I can’t close my eyelids yet. I feel useless for a moment. Alay Lakad. I never, in my life participated this event before. Even though I’m originally from Antipolo City but for the sake of blogging and friendship I tried to walk with a mob of so called believers. It is indeed an oxygen depriving hike and we really had a struggle to walk with a bandwagon of practitioners not to mention that I’m only carrying my camera without any strap.

My original plan was to spend the night at Hiro’s place since he promised that we’ll eat a lot and play X-box but my life is simply grander because of my spontaneous friends. Might be doing it again next year.

I was able to meet-up with my friend, Olive, somewhere in Pampanga during my three day stay there. She’s surprisingly tall and I sincerely love her voice! It sounds somehow different on the phone and on Skype where we used to jam late at night annoying our neighbors trying to catch some sleep. We spent our time together singing, playing the guitar in real life and we watched a movie as well.

It’s our first time to meet in person by the way but we feel very comfortable with each other. I believe it’s because we’re both nurses and we have so much in common. Feels good! Life is so much better outside the internet. Seriously.

WB stands for WineBar. It is a perfect place to hangout for young and working professionals. It might look somewhat expensive but it’s not and it’s surprisingly affordable! We were invited for the wine tasting and we were taught about the origin of the wines, its raw ingredients, the right way to handle a wine glass and why wine lovers love to sniff it. There’s a technique to enjoy your wine and one approach is to share it with friends. We tried different wines progressively, from the lowest concentration of alcohol and it gets higher as we go on.

The place feels very high-end since a lot of foreigners and corporate people are in the place but not to worry… It’s also a good place to consider even if you’re on tight budget but you want to impress someone. The food that was served to us tastes ridiculously good like it’s was showered with love potion. Another great thing about this place is that they have this specialized wine distiller that keeps the wine absolutely fresh while you can instantly pour some more in your wine glass.

This wouldn’t be possible if it wasn’t for another invite from Ms. Vannah Santiago who never failed to amuse us and we are indeed planning to set another event for foodies here on Tumblr! Interested? Kindly like this post and send me a message. We’ll be having it after the Holy week.

I spent some *quality time* with my ex-girlfriend last night which is really awkward because I have no plans of seeing her considering she already has another boyfriend and I don’t want to be the reason for them to break up or to contribute for such blah blah blah drama. But since I feel so empty and I have no one else to run to, I asked her out on a date, if that’s what you call it and fortunately, she obliged. I told her that I’ll make it up to her since she was the one funding most of our dates back when we were still in high school. It’s embarrassing, I know. Sucks because she deserves better. We were so young and immature that time. We got into our relationship when I was fourteen and she was twelve but I’m pretty sure the next generation could top that.

We decided to meet somewhere in Makati after all she’s attending to Assumption which is located in Makati. She went straight to Glorietta after some school stunt while I was with my friend, Mark at Hidalgo and and I have to take two god forsaken trains before I could again breathe for air and see her. We went window shopping, had our lunch at Max’s. We were sharing our feels with each other over our food. We’re very open. I asked her about her current love status and she did the same to me. She kept on dragging the question “Why are you so attached to a person who you never really met in person? How could that possibly happen?” Which bugs me a lot. At first I really don’t know. I simply tried to brush it off. I had no idea but I was actually trying to figure it out.

Everything was so spontaneous since this is far from what we planned on how to spend the day with ourselves. We went up to the cinema. Wendy’s frosty and biggie iced tea! Craving solved! Decided to watch 21 and Over. It’s hilarious and more than watching the movie, I enjoyed seeing her laugh like there’s no one else in the cinema.

The movie then ended. Viewers approved and clapped. We walked by a flower boutique inside the mall. I decided to buy her a flower since I never gave her one before since I’m not a flower person. I still know her favorite flower! She told me she doesn’t like flowers but I insist that I should buy her something which led me to buy her something very personal as my first ever legitimate gift! I’m glad I made her happy. We went home together after all we both live in Antipolo.

While we were in line waiting for the van she asked me the same question and that time I think I already know the answer… I told her I believe I’m not that attached to her. I’m attached with the idea of the person I want to be just to be with her. I’ve done a lot of sacrifices for her. Tried to be a better person. Planned the things I’ll do with her when we finally meet. Even tried to follow her in Japan. Still trying though but she told me that I must give up and she’s superficially pushing me away. She told me that she doesn’t want to depend her happiness on someone when in fact she could be happy on her own. She told me she wasn’t happy with our relationship and she hated the person she became when we got together while I regret nothing to be honest. I pretended to believe that’s the real score but I’m not as dumb as I look. She’s anxious for her freedom so I gave her that.

I feel bad and really sad on how this has to end but whatever struggle I might encounter and how miserable it might be, I shall not lose hope. We get our hearts broken but it builds our character. She might have given up on me. We may be through but I’m not over yet.

Revisiting Baguio

It wasn’t my first time to visit the beautiful city of Baguio and heck I’ve been here like about five times or more already but there are still a lot more stuff to take photos of.

So blessed to visit the place during their Baguio Flower Festival, more known as “Panagbenga” festival. Indeed so loud, vivid, and colorful but I decided not to take photos of the floats and the performing bands just because, frankly, I was pissed not to have given the permission to take photos beyond the media/sponsor area which really sucks because I only have 60mm prime lens with me. But yeah, redemption is to be acquired next time soon.

Woke up very early today and eagerly rushed my way to Hidalgo to fetch my little princess, Margaret. A Nikon D700.

Here’s some first few photos from my new camera. Shooting with a full frame sensor at last! I apparently sold my old Nikon D300s and most of my crop sensor lenses for this and I’m telling you it is really worth it. Never imagined that I’ll be using a full-frame sensor format any sooner. This is also a surprise for me. Thank you sweet Jesus!
